‘The Mountains Sing’ MA Illustration book design
This series of speculative illustrations was created as part of my Masters project exploring visual storytelling and narrative interpretation.
Inspired by The Mountains Sing by Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai, the work responds to themes of memory and family resilience across generations.
The aim was to make this adult novel accessible for KS2 and KS3 readers, visualizing this important history for a young international audience.
These illustrations are an independent academic and creative response to the text and are intended for educational and portfolio purposes only. -
‘As we walked, Grandma would tell me about the past.’
‘The French took much more than they brought. Life was hard.’
‘News of the Northern Army capturing Saigon brought torrents of people out of their homes.’
‘I wish I’d understood the significance of that day’
‘While others celebrated, we prayed’
